Public Information Center #2 – QEW Improvements

Hello,

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained AECOM Canada Ltd. (AECOM) to undertake a Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for improvements to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) from east of Cawthra Road to The East Mall. The project was split into two contracts. Construction of Contract 1 along the QEW from east of Dixie Road to The East Mall commenced in September 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2022. Contract 2 covers the works along QEW from east of Cawthra Road to west of Etobicoke Creek and is the focus of Public Information Centre (PIC) #2. Please refer to the attached Notice of Public Information Centre (PIC) #2 – Virtual PIC for more information about the project and the upcoming PIC.

New Community Survey – Construction of a Pedestrian Bridge over Etobicoke Creek

Why a New survey?

The OHHA Board has received diverse views from the community about the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Etobicoke Creek that will connect Orchard Heights Park (OHP), our ravine park off Lincolnshire, to the Etobicoke Creek Trail. TheOHHA Board wants to know what our community thinks about this bridge.

A Personal Thank You from Councillor Stephen Dasko

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who was able to participate in my Speakers Series session on Thursday, April 22, 2021.  As well, I would like to thank the Speakers for their excellent presentations.  The topics granted, are complicated and challenging.  It was for these reasons, I wanted to share with you the understanding of the various Planning processes.
 
My intent on hosting these Speakers Series is to provide an opportunity for everyone across the Ward to be brought up to date, have your input, and address concerns on the various topics in each session.

Spring Tree Giveaway Program

Councillor Dasko would like to pass along some information to your neighbours.

To encourage residents to celebrate Earth Days at home while continuing to support the City’s One Million Trees initiative, Forestry is giving away 500 trees to residents to plant on their private property this spring!

Beginning on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22 at 5 p.m., residents can log on to onemilliontrees.eventbrite.com to register to receive a free tree of their choice from an inventory of 250 trees. An additional 250 trees will become available on Wednesday, May 5 for anyone who was unable to claim a tree during the first offering.

Trees will be delivered to residents’ homes during the month of May and delivery information and planting instructions will be provided closer to the time of delivery.

Residential Rat Control Subsidy Program

I don’t believe that we have a rat problem in Orchard Heights at this time, however, be advised there is a subsidy program in place.

Information on the Residential Rat Control Subsidy program can be found here.

The program reimburses eligible residents for 50% of the cost in hiring of a Region of Peel approved pest control vendor up to a maximum of $200 per calendar year per residential Peel address. 

The pilot program is available from March 22, 2021 to March 31, 2022. 

If a resident spends more than $400 in the calendar year, they will receive the maximum subsidy amount of $200. If they spend anything less than $400, they will receive 50% of the total cost.

Earth Day Events

Councillor Dasko would like to share this regarding our Earth Days programming (running until April 24).

The City is co-hosting a special event, “Our Climate Our Stories” in partnership with Community Climate Council, EnviroMuslims, and BAM (Books, Art, Music) Collective. This event will explore climate stories and experiences from our Canadian Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) youth.

The event will take place tomorrow April 22, 2021, from 5:00-6:30 pm.  The event is online. Residents can register for the event here: https://bit.ly/3x0X0bk

During the event, we will also announce the launch of We Are Resilient, a collaborative project by Environment and Museums. We Are Resilient is a contest running from April 22 to August 31 for community photographers and storytellers inspired by our Climate Change Action Plan. We Are Resilient aims to harness and share the energy, passion and creativity expressed by our community to create a more resilient future for Mississauga. We encourage you to tune in to this and other Earth Days events, www.mississauga.ca/earthdays.  

How to get involved in the We Are Resilient contest:
This is a great opportunity for residents in the Ward to showcase resilience in our neighbourhoods and communities.  The contest will run from April 22 to August 31, 2021.

Provide Your Input on the Development of the City’s Urban Agriculture Strategy

The City of Mississauga is looking for input on the development of an Urban Agriculture Strategy through an online survey launching today. The strategy will help identify the City’s role in supporting efforts to increase urban-scale food production across Mississauga.

Urban agriculture is the practice of growing, processing, sharing and distributing food within the city. Examples of urban agriculture can include growing fruits, herbs and vegetables, nurturing pollinator habitats and selling artisanal products.

The strategy will help Mississauga mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change by enhancing community-level resilience and preparedness. It will also provide opportunities for the City to encourage healthier lifestyles, empower residents to learn new skills about growing and harvesting produce and support local businesses to develop ties to urban agriculture.

Online Survey Details

An online survey to gather input on priorities for the City’s Urban Agriculture Strategy.

Who:

·       Mississauga residents

·       School boards

·       Community partners

·       Gardeners and food growers

·       Community groups
